5 NYC Workouts Models Swear By

By: Jillian Gallagher
Don't worry ladies and gents, there are still 66 days until summer officially starts and if it's anything like how this spring has been going, you'll have a few more days before you can break out the mini skirts and shorts. Where do you go to work on your summer body? Why not the places that some of the best models are known to frequent? Here is a list of five different workouts that are visited by some of the top models in the business:
1.     Body By Simone
Simone de la Rue opened her first studio in 2011, where she helped people dance their way into better shape. Now she has six studios, including one in midtown west right by the water. BBS has five signature classes; Dance Cardio, Full Body, ABC (Arms, Back and Core), HTB (Hips, Thighs, and Buns) and Trampoline Cardio. Each class costs around $35 for a drop in class and $160 for a package of five classes. Since each class is ballet based, models find the lean muscles they are looking for and a fun way to get in their cardio.
2.     SLT
Strengthen Lengthen Tone, the name alone draws models to the studio. In fact, it calls anyone who is looking to get abs and muscles without the bulk. SLT was founded in 2011 by Amanda Freedman and now has seven locations in Manhattan alone. It is a reformer pilates class that highlights slow-twitch muscle movements, controlled movements and counter resistance to give a hardcore pilates workout. Classes start at $40 per single class and $195 for a package of five classes.
3.     Flex Studios
Flex Studios offers another option in the reformer pilates workout. In my experience the weight is a little less heavy at Flex compared to SLT, which is great for people who bulk up more easily. Another positive to Flex is that they offer more than just pilates! When you purchase a class package you have the option to use it for a reformer pilates class, barre class, and TRX. Since 2012, when Jeanette Simon started Flex, the studio has opened two locations in union square and NOHO.
4.     Mile High Run Club
If you have trouble motivating yourself to run in your apartment gym, this might be the place for you. The Soul Cycle of the treadmill, Mile High Run Club offers people a place to run with a group and instructor. There are two locations in the city, one the lower east side and another in Chelsea. Models have been seen here working on their running techniques as well as just looking to get in a good sweat. Classes start at $34 a class and packages of 10 cost $280.
5.     Gotham Gym
Last but certainly not least, Gotham Gym, my personal favorite workout in the city. Known for its work with supermodels such as Gigi Hadid or Sara Sampaio, Gotham Gym is a boxing workout that is great (and hard) for anyone. Gotham offers group classes as well as personal training sessions. They have a location in the west village as well as the Hamptons. You can go to as many classes as you'd like with a monthly fee of $130. Rob Piela, who has been a trainer and educator in physical fitness for the past 20 years, founded Gotham Gym. He still directly oversees many of the day-to-day operations in the gym and gives personal training sessions.

Why is Charcoal in Everything?

It’s in your toothpaste, your facemask, even in your soap! What is the big deal about Charcoal? Back in 2015 was when we first started hearing about the powers of charcoal. Since then it has spread from beauty products to our household items to our food. Everywhere we look there seems to be a hue of grey. If you’re like me, you might have gotten caught up in the trend without intending to and now somehow you have been partaking in some benefits that you have no idea what they are. I’m here to inform you how charcoal can help you in the many different forms of products we see it in today. We’ll start at the very beginning, the birth of the charcoal trend, the toothpaste. It was hard to go on social media without seeing someone with seriously black teeth that somehow turned their teeth whiter. How does it work? According to Trust Dental Care these toothpastes are made from a form of charcoal called Activated Charcoal. Activated Charcoal has natural adhesive qualities...

Jumpin' Jumpin'

This was honestly one of the hardest workouts I have ever done. Aerospace's areojump class is one that is hard to beat. It was (almost) a full class of jump roping (the silent killer of cardio) coupled with a few toning exercises.  Aerospace is know for training many of the Victoria's Secret models including Adriana Lima. Located in the heart of Chelsea, it is easy to get to from almost anywhere in Manhattan. They offer eight different classes along with a "Training Camp". Their classes include ThinkFast, AeroBox, Aero3, AeroBarre, AeroJump (the one I took), AreoImpact, AeroPower and AeroFly. Aerospace's website descrbes it's training camp as,"Every muscle in the body battles against gravity in this ultimate fitness class designed to enhance endurance, speed, stamina, power, coordination, recall, tone and muscle strength." Sounds like my next Aerospace workout will be taking this training camp challenge!

Gotham Gym in Gotham City

Photo taken after one of my first sessions at Gotham with Rob Gotham is my NYC workout favorite, not only because they are welcoming and friendly, but they can also kick your butt! Known for its work with supermodels such as Gigi Hadid or Sara Sampaio, Gotham Gym is a quickly expanding boxing gym that is great for anyone. I started going to Gotham about four years ago when I lived in the city for a summer. I was here for modeling and my agency set up a session with the gym’s owner, Rob. Let me just say, they take their motto, “Train like a fighter” very seriously!  I have been an athlete all my life, from field hockey to swim team, and this workout was hard! Rob pushed me to my limit in a firm but friendly way. The workout was a mixture of boxing and toning exercises that left me sore the next day.  More recent workout at Gotham with Mike Castilo Today, Gotham has group classes that you can sign up for through ClassPass or MindBody apps and they offer per...
